ABOUT US
Summit Gelbvieh stud is the flagship of Pugh Enterprises. The stud was established in 1994 after a large scale breed evaluation trial to see what breed/s were best suited to cross with our closed herd of Hereford-Simmentals. We chose Murray Greys as our low input British breed and went with Gelbvieh as our high performance European cattle.
Gelbviehs emerged as an easy choice because of their all round male and female breeding power and the type that could be found within the breed showed easy care was polled and blended extremely well with the British bred cattle mainly making them bigger, stronger and higher performing without changing their general look.
We chose Summit as our stud name because our original Number 1 sire was a bull called Ballanee Poll Summit. He had over 200 calves and they were the type we were chasing. Since 1994 we have been all over Australia and to Canada and the United States chasing new genetics that suited our breeding objectives.
We are now close to having a stud herd of 500 cows that will give us lots of breeding power to breed both purebred and composite bulls, for what we feel will be an emerging demand for people who are chasing more production and profit - and shouldn't that be everyone.
Breeding Objectives
1) Structural correctness with good feet
2) An easy care type that blends well
3) Totally Polled
4) A productive blend of growth, muscle, milk and constitution that makes
a real difference to bottom lines
5) Early maturity essential with moderate birthweight
6) Making the most of natural feed efficiency
7) Natural smooth, fine, early shedding coat - this has big advantages in feedlots (less dags)
8) Trying to keep away from raw boned, harsh coat, thick skinned types - weight can be achieved without big frame. High mature weight is not desirable | |
